15.01.2015: Winterreisen | Georgien (Elena Pagel & Marcus Oert

To really escape everyday life and dive into the Caucasian universe – this is what a group of four from Dresden managed to do last summer. Georgia is a country full of contradictions that we were able to experience thoroughly. The mountains of the high Caucasus at the border to Russia and the beaches near Batumi at the Black Sea, the lively metropolis Tbilissi and a small sleepy village at the border triangle with Armenia and Azerbaijan – they are worlds apart! But everywhere we encountered friendly people, tasty food, and delicious wines, cultural wealth, and natural beauty.

From Tbilissi, Stalin’s native town Gori, and Zugdidi we travelled to the mesmerising mountains of Svaneti with the quaint villages and the typical defence towers. In sight of the peaks of the Ushba and Shkhara we walked on the dusty path, which is also the only route through Svaneti, to medieval-seeming Ushguli. Once arrived in the lowlands again, we drove to Adjara where we jumped into the warm water at the beach of Kobuleti before marvelling at the sparkling worlds of the regional capital Batumi. Back in Tbilissi we prepared for the next adventure that would take us close to the border triangle to Armenia and Azerbaijan. In the secluded village Tserkvi, where the asphalt road ends, the ONE Caucasus Festival took place on the last weekend of August, where Georgian, Polish, and English bands played. The local community consisting of Georgians, Azerbaijanis, Armenians, and Greeks had a blast as well as the circa 100 international helpers … and the guests from Dresden.
